ARTIST STATEMENT
Barbie, Nature and Wildlife Photographer
I created the series Barbie, Photographer as a visual story for the idea that Barbie can do anything. Barbie is seen as an icon of cultural beauty standards, but was originally intended to be an inspirational independent career woman. My series humanizes the doll, showing her as an artist working through her goals and creative process, more than just wearing a career outfit and accessories; she is doing the work.
This project was inspired by my lifelong love of Barbie, fashion, art, and the beautiful, playful fantasy world Barbie inspires. I approach this project with an awareness for how women are viewed in terms of looks and career, and the dedication to achieve goals with warmth and a sense of humor.
In this chapter, Barbie, Nature and Wildlife Photographer, she explores the need to create and find meaning in her artwork. The color palette shifts from her home life of mostly pink, to the vibrant greens of the outdoor jungle. Barbie focuses on using her talents for a greater cause, to create more awareness for preserving and protecting wildlife.
This is an ongoing series created to challenge perceptions of womanhood, gender roles and societal expectations. Over several chapters we will see Barbie expand her life and career.
